  • students will recognize the differences as well as the similarities
  • the similarities can be used in evaluating the authenticity of the source
  • this will also reinforce the importance of using more than one source

  • conducting curriculum based research, students can chart the similarities and differences found in a number of sources
  • compare the information found on a Canadian topic or historical figure or event on Wikipedia, The Canadian Encyclopedia, and a printed source

Concepts/Skills

  • Information can be presented in a variety of ways.
  • Students will recognize that often the viewpoint and bias of the author will affect the way the information is presented and may also impact its meaning and accuracy.
  • Discussion questions could include:
    - is the author using absolute words like 'always' or 'never'
    - is the author using superlative words like 'best of worst'
    - does any of the information contradict information you have found elsewhere
    - do you feel that the author knowledgeable about the topic

  • Students will use the following evaluation tools in determining both relevance and suitability:
    - deconstruct the URL
    - scanning through the resource using key words/concepts to determine relevance

  • Teacher-led tour of relevant sites can be conducted before the students begin selecting resources on a topic
