The article on MacKenzie Gas Pipeline, ship movement in the MacKenzie Delta and Beaufort Sea states that whales can hear up noise up to 11km. I would be interested to know the sensitivity of their hearing to the volume and quantity of noise and the impact of numerous noises and whether it impedes their own communications.

The main concern of environmentalists is that yes, indeed, the human-made noises in the sea do interfere with whale communication. It can also cause them great stress--think of how annoying an incessantly barking dog can be. See Ocean Noise and Marine Mammals, 2003, readable online.

Hi Amanda,

I too love your sight. I live in one of the less famous Inuit land claim settlement areas, Nunavik, Quebec, and really enjoy your international news. Good stuff. I blog at http://openheadspace.blogspot.com/ and I would like to add you to a growing list on English language blog sites I have been collecting at my site. Would you mind if I linked up with you?
