Fictional plane crash brings 1,000 rescuers to Lapland ![]()
(YLE, 20 October 2007) -- A massive international disaster management training exercise wraps up on Sunday in Finnish Lapland. More than 1,000 people from the Nordic countries, Russia and Britain are taking part in the Barents Rescue 2007 exercise. The four-day BR07 event is aimed at improving cooperation and the flow of information among first responders in the region and practicing rescue operations in challenging terrain. On Saturday there was a simulated crash landing of an airplane carrying mostly British tourists in the wilderness near Ivalo. According to the fictional scenario, up to 200 people were killed or injured in the crash, and possibility of terrorism could not be excluded. The exercise comes as Finland concludes a two-year term as Chair of the Barents Euro-Arctic Council.
