Environmentalists fear Stockman   news:

(Aftenposten, 26 October 2007) -- Environmental organizations fear that Norwegian assistance in the development of the Russian Stockman field will also increase the pressure for oil development in the Barents Sea. The major environmental organizations believe it is naive to think that StatoilHydro can make the Stockman development safe and eco-friendly. The Norwegian groups argue that Russian environmental regulations will count, and they are not impressed with those. "We have always believed that it is completely indefensible to develop the Stockman field, and Norwegian participation won't make it any better," Nature and Youth (NU) deputy leader Ingeborg Gjærum told news agency NTB. NU leader Bård Lahn writes that environmental regulation in Russia has been undermined after all NGOs (non-governmental organizations) have lost the right to testify at formal hearings. Friends of the Earth Norway (FoEN) fear damage to the northern region as a result. See also Bellona's "A sad day for the Barents Sea."
