New northern business magazine prepared to launch

(CBC News, 2 January 2008) -- Newsstands across Canada will soon carry a new northern business magazine that replaces existing trade publications devoted to the diamond, oil and gas industries in the North. Up Here Business will be published monthly, with its first issue due out in mid-January. The glossy publication aims to give readers a general overview of business in Canada's North, showcasing the economies in the region's three territories. "Here in the North there's very little east-west contact or movement, and we think that in some cases it would be of interest to the business community to see what their neighboring business communities are doing," publisher Marion Lavigne, co-owner of Up Here Publishing, told CBC News in an interview. Up Here Business merges two previous Up Here publications, Canadian Diamonds and Far North Oil and Gas. While Lavigne started both in the last 10 years to focus on those industries, she said a lack of major new developments in either industry has led to waning advertiser interest. Rather than lament the loss of an industry magazine, the North's mining organization has applauded the launch of a pan-territorial business publication.
