Welcome

Welcome to Mayo, in the heart of the Yukon. Mayo is home of the Na Cho Nyak Dun First Nation.

Geography- The Mayo district includes the Stewart River and its tributaries from Mayo River eastward, the Mayo River and its tributaries and the north and south branches of the McQuesten River and their tributaries.

The Stewart River, called Nacho Nyak - Big River- in Northern Tutchone remained almost completely isolated until the discovery of gold there in 1883.

Mayo Indian people originally came from nearby camps along the Stewart River, as well as from Fort Selkirk, Lansing, Fort Norman and even as far as Fort MacPherson. ( From The Eyes of Strangers Julie Cruikshank)
