ANTH 225 - Field Methods - How Your Grade Will Be Calculated
Appropriate Community Behaviour - Pass/Fail
Attendance and Participation – XX/60
Methods – XX/30
This mark will assess your development of field survey, excavation, interview, and observation skills. An satisfactory achievement level will demonstrate continued development and refinement of experientially taught skills; a superior achievement level will reflect the experimentation and integration of additional skills introduced through your assigned texts.
Camp Life – XX/30
This mark will assess your contributions to the establishment and maintenance of a safe, hygienic, happy, and productive camp. A satisfactory performance level will be achieved through the clean and safe maintenance of personal camp space, regular attendance to assigned camp chores, and a lack of interpersonal conflict. A superior performance level is achieved through regular contributions to the improvement of communal camp life ("What have I done today to make camp a better place?").
Field Notes and Summary – XX/100
Field Notes – XX/60
This mark will assess your field notes in terms of their completeness, comprehensibility, and insight. A satisfactory performance level will be achieved through prompt recording of excavation activities and observations, a daily summary of activities, and the submission of a final typed, digital copy of your notes. "Daily activities" includes the ethnographic experience of travelling through and observing the social and cultural activities of the fieldwork society. A superior achievement level will demonstrate an awareness and integration of observations within contiguous units or by other investigators, and the exploration of possible interpretative explanations for observed data.
Summary Account – XX/40
This mark will assess the final summary of your experience, which must be submitted typewritten, in a digital format, along with your field notes at the end of term. A satisfactory submission will provide a descriptive summary of learned skills and significant experiences, as well as positive ideas for improvement of the operation of the field school and your participation. A superior submission will attempt to place your experience within a theoretical epistemological framework, and examine, through experiential detail, the relationship between the fieldwork experience and anthropological theory.

The mark received on both the mid-term and final exams will be that achieved in their writing.
