The Achievements of Ancient Mesopotamia
Introduction
Located in present day Iraq Mesopotamia is now a place of war and
terror. But long ago it was Mesopotamia that started the first civilization. In this report you will learn of some of Mesopotamians greatest achievements and how they shaped our future.
Farming
Long ago food was mostly gathered by following herds or one animal and hunting it down. But this way of getting food never guarantied you would have food on your plate at the end of the day. It was then the people of Mesopotamia who realized they could simply catch herds of animals and fence the animals in over large chunks of land. The people also began making fields to grow crops in. This is how farming began.
The Wheel
The wheel, it’s on cars and wagon and allows you to move incredibly fast. But the people to thank for the wheel aren’t at you local car dealership, but the Mesopotamians! It started with trade items being rolled across many logs. But over time round wood wheels were attached to wagons and carts allowing the Mesopotamians, to move around items more easily.
Cuneiform
The Mesopotamians over long period of time soon realized they needed to keep track of simple things such as trade and farming. They then created the worlds first writing form, cuneiform. It was simple images or designs at first that scribes or skilled drawers and writers placed on clay tablets. They soon even developed simple numbers! This was how writing was developed.
Money and Trade
For hundreds of years bartering was all the Mesopotamians could do to get simple needs. But soon wealthy people began paying their taxes with silver coils and many villagers began paying with copper! Deferent sizes of coins determined their worth. They also started selling things for more than the objects worth this made them profit but also caused war and stealing. This was how money was developed.
Conclusion
In this report I learned alot. I never knew such a small group ofpeople could make such a large difference in our future!

Think for Yourself
1. To get the fruit out of the tree I would break down a small skinny tree and poke the fruit off the tree!
2. To make a bowl for water I would grab a coconut and crack it in half with a rock.
3. For long term needs I would need a bowl for water, a shelter for sleep for short term needs I would need a wooden spear and a fire pit. I would need shelter so I wouldn’t freeze to death. The other long term need would be a bowl for water so I could store fresh water. I would only need a spear for a short term need, because I could also get food with my hands such as fruit. I would only need a fire pit as a short term need because my shelter would provide enough heat to keep me alive. I would not need to cook all my meat because the meat from the wild animal wouldn’t have been fed any by- products.

The name of the group you are about to hear about is the homo sapiens sapiens. Homo sapiens sapiens date back to an estimated 10000 years ago, and are still here today as the only surviving species of humans! These species of humans are not as stocky and built as some of the older species of humans and have almost no sexual dimorphism between males and females. Homo sapiens sapiens are famous for the ability to make tools. The ones of the present have made game boys, computers and some of the old homo sapiens sapiens have made baskets and ovens. Homo sapiens sapiens have developed skills to use their inventions to their advantage, such as planes and cars used to travel places in hours that would could take years to walk. Homo sapiens sapiens are the most dominant species of animal in the world and have no predator!
