Mesopotamia Achievements
by Jessica
January 12, 2006
Mesopotamia was a city-state community between the Euphrates and the Tigris rivers, which was created in about 5000 B.C.E. The word Mesopotamia came from the greek word mesos meaning “middle”, and another greek word potamos meaning “river”. After it became known as the “land between two rivers”. If Mesopotamia was still around it would be in Iraq.
One great achievement of the Sumerians (Mesopotamian people) is the wheel. Today the wheel is used for many different daily uses. One that you might know of really well is cars. If they didn’t figure out the wheel we wouldn’t have major needs of transportation. Now I’ll tell you how they invented the wheel. Before the wheel was invented they invented sledges(a type of sleigh). Then they decided to roll logs so it would be easy to use for traveling. Then, they decided to figure out how to attach it and they did.
Another great achieve of the Sumerians is Cuneiform. Cuneiform is written language that they used to figure out how to keep track of things like for example barterers or trades made by the people. First they used tokens, but they didn’t know what they traded exactly. So the Sumerians decided to use symbols using a wedge. The earliest forms of writing occurred in 3300 B.C.E. Today some people use a letters of the alphabet and numbers to keep track of things.
Mesopotamia is one of the first city-state communities that had civilization. City-states is when “the city follows their own rules and not the countries rules that are in the same area”. Most of them had jobs, a King, and shelter. Now we have communities, but not many city-states anymore.
When people traded the used something like tokens in place of the essential. Today we use money and buy things and that’s kind of what they did. They had different type of money to trade just like we do all over the world. Today we would have to barter if we didn’t have money to trade.
These four achievements are just a few that the Sumerians did. Today we would have the objects, or inventions if it wasn’t for the Mesopotamian’s small inventions. So Mesopotamia was a very important city-state from the past and it changed the future.

The city I’m doing is Damascus in Syria. Syria is by the countries of Iraq, Jordan, Israel, Lebanon, and Turkey. I’ve looked on the web site http://www.galenfrysinger.com/damascus_syria.htm and it shows many photo’s and info about it to. Damascus (also called Dimashq) is the capital of Syria and also the chief city. Today it is still a city. It has been around for very long before Christ. It’s by Israel so it has some Cathloic religion in it which was introduced in the 1st century A.D.. Damascus is a ancient city but it hasn’t died down.

Australopithecus are creatures that are very early humans. They lived about between 4.2 and 1.2 millions of years ago, which was a very long time ago.
They looked ape like according to their fossils scientists say. They are “pre human hominoid” which means that they were not fully humans. They have arched backs and aren’t upright like us, the Homo Sapiens Sapiens are today.
If you ever saw an orangutan(an ape like animal) they are like that except they are walking on two legs instead of walking on both feet and legs.
Australopithecus used only the simplest tools like a twig and a leaf or anything simple like that. They didn’t make homes and just ran around like wild animals.
They developed how to walk upright so they were the first to walk upright, but they were also the first humans we think. They also learned how to produce simple tools for example to scrape food with a rock.
They had to eat though so they probably picked nut on the ground because they had to eat dry, gritty food such as nuts. They also showed sexual dimorphism which mean making the male bigger than the female. They had small brains and teeth similar to ours today except we take care of ours with the tools we have invented.

If I landed up on a deserted island I would have to make tools out of what’s on the island. If I saw a coconut or fruit on a tree up high I would have to make a tool to get it for food. I would make a ladder to get the food off the tree. The ladder would be made out of sticks and find out some sort of string to tie it together somehow or I would use strings of wood from a tree that i scraped of if that’s possible. I would have to experiment with different things like vine or I could make a stepping stone out of wood.
After I got the fruit out of the tree I would have to get water to go with. I would find a stream and I would need to get a tool to carry it and store it. I would use a hollowed out log with picked leaves in it to make sure the water doesn’t seep through or I would live near the stream to get water whenever I want if the stream is on the beach so I can get help if I was stuck there.
Some long term needs are shelter, bed, spear to get food, bucket to get water, maybe food and water, and mostly tools. Some short term needs are food, water, sometimes a spear and many more.
