Mesopotamia's Achievements

Mesopotamia was located in Iraq, but it doesn’t exist anymore. It is the world’s first civilization, and it’s people (the Sumerians) developed many useful things that we use everyday; the wheel, a number system, a writing system, irrigation, etc. If it weren’t for the Sumerians we wouldn’t be able to do many of the things that we do everyday. Mesopotamia was developed in 5000 B.C.E.

The Sumerians’ first achievement was irrigation. Irrigation made it much easier for the Sumerians to survive because it meant that they were guaranteed clean water to drink and water their plants with. This also meant that they had a more consistent food supply and didn’t have to wander around looking for food.

The Sumerians’ second achievement was the writing system (Cuneiform). Cuneiform meant that the Sumerians could keep track of trade and what they had. For example; farmers could keep track their livestock, how much food they had, etc.

The Sumerians’ third achievement was the wheel. Using the wheel the Sumerians could haul objects to different places in carts so that they could trade with people far away. The wheel was also used when in war against other City-states.

The Sumerians’ fourth achievement was the number system. The number system was made so that they could keep track of how many of something they had, and how many of something they needed to trade to get something else.

In conclusion without the Sumerians we wouldn’t have a lot of the technology we have now (Cars, books, etc.). Thanks to them we can do many things that they couldn’t.

Catal Huyuk

This website talks about Catal Huyuk. Catal Huyuk (Chat-al Hoo-yook) is an ancient city in Turkey. Some of it’s ruins are dated back to 6500 B.C! This website is very interesting and talks a lot about how Catal Huyuk was HUGE compared to the other cities back then. It also mentions a lot about the religion. I learned a lot about Catal Huyuk from this site.

Australopithecus (southern ape)

The Austrlopithecus were “prehuman hominoids.” They were more ape than any other species of hominoid, and less human. They lived in East and South Africa around 1.2 to 4 million years ago. They were extremely ape-like and had small brains, but walked on two legs instead of four and had teeth similar to today’s humans. They ate hard, gritty foods such as nuts and tubers, fruits, seeds, earlier ones ate leaves, and may have eaten some meat. Australopithecus could only use simple tools; for example, sticks and twigs. The earlier ones lived in forests while the later ones lived in woodlands.

Deserted Isle

If I was shipwrecked on a deserted island and I saw some fruit high up in the tree I would take a huge rock, throw it at the tree, and knock down the fruit that way. If that didn’t work I would take an extremely long stick or tree branch and knock it down that way, but I think the rock would work better if I had good aim. After I knocked down the fruit I would need to get water from the stream. If the fruit were coconuts I would break the coconut in half and use that to carry and store the water. If not I would try to make a bucket out of anything I could find. I would need food, water, and shelter to survive on the island. To get these things I would need tools to help me. I would want to make a bucket like thing from wood or coconuts on the island to store my water, a spear made from wood and sharp rocks so that I could eat meat, a heavy rock to knock down fruit, and a device to hold my food so that I could cook it over a fire. I would also need driftwood, large branches, sticks, and rope or vines to make myself a shelter. A cave would also work. On top of all that I would need extremely dry grass or something like that so I could start a fire.
