Nika`s Mesopotamia Report

Mesopotamia

A long time ago there was a place called Mesopotamia. Mesopotamia is located near and inside of Iraq. Mesopotamia was the cradle of civilization, which means that scientist believe that Mesopotamia was the oldest place that people once lived there. Those people were called Sumerians. These people are what scientist believe that these people were the very first record of people from that time.

Their first achievement was the City-State. That was a place in the center of the Sumerians towns. Inside the City-State there was a court, and some buildings, and some other buildings and such.

Their second achievement was the worlds very first writing system. This system was called the Cuneiform. This writing was very different from the system we use today. You can write like a Sumerian and find out what you name or initials look like:

http://www.upennmuseum.com/cuneiform.cgi/ .

The Sumerians third achievement was the wheel. Yes, the wheel. The everyday we use wheel, but their wheel was very different, it did not have any rubber or metal. It was most likely a wooden wheel.

The fourth achievement the Sumerians made was the sailboat. Their sailboat most likely made from wood and cloth materials. The body of the boat was probably made from a carved out log and the masses were most likely made from cloth materials. They most likely used the sailboat to go out fishing on either Tigris or the Euphrates rivers.

Mesopotamia was what the scientist believe is the very first civilization, or the cradle of life. The sad part about Mesopotamia is that it no longer exists today, another sad thing is the very old statues that once stood very high and might is now being wrecked. This is because of the war that is happening today, from across the world. It is all in Iraq were the bombing is taking place. So all the items that are bombed into small tiny bits could have told us a little bit more about Mesopotamia and the people know as the Sumerians, and the mighty land know as the cradle of life, Mesopotamia.

Tikal - Ancient Mayan City

Tikal Ancient Mayan City

Tikal is an ancient city in the center of Guatemala. Tikal was once ruled by the Mayan’s. Maya cities were rarely laid out in neat grids, appear to have developed in an unplanned fashion, with temples and palaces torn down and rebuilt over and over throughout the centuries. Some cities were surround by a moat, and others had defensive earthworks around them; however this was unusual. City walls are rare at Maya sites, with the exception of some recently discovered cities dating to the collapse of Maya civilization, when protective walls were suddenly thrown up around cities under siege from outside enemies. Temple-pyramids were the most amazing feature of a classic Maya city. These buildings were built from hand cut limestone blocks and towered over all surrounding structures. Some cities were built on the ocean side for when their enemies were coming to attack so the would most likely hop in a boat and paddle off. Sometimes the city they left they never went back to and so they just abounded it and just let it rot. There is no real agreement on what the palaces were actually used for.
