Press Release
Jack Hulland School’s Space Shuttle Launch
Thursday January 19th, 2006 our grade 6 class is blasting off into
space. This 12 hour simulated space mission has been designed to have
students experience what it is like to be an astronaut or work in
Mission Control.
Since mid-October, our class has been working on a Space unit to
prepare for this incredible event. Students needed to go through an
application process to become part of the Space School and have since
been learning about the solar system, history of space exploration, and
conducting space-related experiments while following a strict astronaut
physical training program.
Seven student astronauts and twenty student mission control personnel,
with the help of a few adults, will work toward simulating a real space
shuttle mission. During this real time 12 hour mission, the crew
of Jack Hulland’s space shuttle “Excelsior” will communicate via
computer with mission control, parents and students from other schools
and other community members.
Astronauts will keep journals and post their thoughts about their
experiences on our website. They will exercise, follow procedures
for take-off and landing, and conduct experiments in the areas of
Science and Medicine such testing their senses and the effects of
microgravity on maze completion and eye-hand response time, etc.
All of this will be recorded “live” on our website Excelsior Space Mission 2006.
The astronauts will be supported by our Mission Control personnel who
will be maintaining our Internet site and performing crucial duties in
the areas of Communication, Navigation, Public Affairs, Science and
Medicine.
We would like to invite you to our launch and subsequent activities
during our simulation. The launch is scheduled for 10:00 am,
January 19th, 2006 and the simulation will end 12 hours later at 10:00
pm. There will be a press conference at 9:15 am, January 19th,
2006 in our school library. Department of Education officials,
The Premier, the Education Minister, our Member of Parliament, Mayor
and Council Members have been invited.
