Mr. Dent
Sciences Humaines 8 & 9
- First major project is due Thursday, Oct. 9.
- Students should have their subjects chosen (theme & civilization or country/region - see handouts), their initial questions (that will guide their research), and their "spiderwebs" ("toiles d'arraignée") complete for Friday, Sept. 5.
- This week (Sept. 2-5) the focus for both grades is on beginning the major projects.
- Students have been given handouts detailing the expectations for
the three major projects being done this semester as well as the
breakdown of marks for the course. Parents are encouraged to discuss
these handouts with their children and to contact Mr. Dent with any
questions they may have. I can be reached at the school from 8:00am to
4:00pm and my school email address is bruce.dent@yesnet.yk.ca .
- Every Friday the students (in both grades) will spend the period in the library working on the major projects.
- Every Monday the students will participate in a Current Events discussion.
- Question to be answered for Tuesday, Sept. 9: Who are the Yukon candidates in the upcoming federal election? (Students need to know names and political parties - NDP = special case at this time.)
- Practice note cards assigned Friday will be checked by Mr. Dent Tuesday, Sept. 9.
- Friday, Sept. 19 should be the last day that students spend on research for Project #1. After this time, students should be working on the outline for their project. A loose timeline should look as follows:
- Research - Sept. 5 to Sept. 19
- Outline - Sept. 24
- First & Second Drafts (including editing) - Oct. 3
- Final Draft due Oct. 9
- Students have now learned how to make a proper outline for their project. Outlines for Project #1, along with all research notes (index cards), must be shown to Mr. Dent by Wednesday, Sept. 24.
- My apologies for not having updated this site during the last week. I have been going a little nuts waiting for our baby (now 12 days overdue!) to show up.
- The baby finally arrived! An 8 lb, 8 oz boy named Rowan, Sat., Oct. 4. Thank-you to all those students who sent messages of congratulations. Thanks also to all students and parents for their patience with my absence this past week.
- The baby has put me somewhat behind on a couple of things (can you believe I would blame the little guy?!?), but interim marks will be available Monday, Oct. 20 and will be sent home at that time so that parents have them in time for interviews next week.
- Project #2 is due Friday, November 21. By now all students should have shown me their research notes and outlines. These (together) are worth 15% of the project, so anyone who has not done this by now should get those in.
- Project #3 (the final project) is due Monday, January 12 (Tuesday, January 13 for A block).
