Teacher Note

On the 28th and 29th of September, 2006 the Golden Horn Elementary classes of Mrs. Harrison (grade 7) and Mr. Clarke/Mrs. Hirsch (grade 6/7) went to Kusawa Lake campground for a class field trip. With the assistance of Mr. Greg Hare, Yukon Archaeologist, the class participated in a number of archaeological activities from looking for ancient tool pieces to interpreting the natural surroundings and participating in a mock crime scene investigation. When not participating in the archaeological activities students did a short hike up the mountain behind the campground. Armed with pencils and paper students drew sketches and brainstormed for verbs, adjectives and nouns in an attempt to describe their surroundings. The poems below are the end result of many hours spent writing and editing their works. I hope you enjoy them.

Kusawa

Bottomless lake rippling gently

Dry parched grass cracking in the wind

Clear water flowing as smoothly as a snake in the grass

Cold harsh wind bending trees out of shape

Annoying bugs pestering

A blue creek tripping over stones in its path

Trails winding up a mountain

Huge rocks tumbling

Big boulders rolling fast

Grey trees bent out of shape by the wind

Kusawa Lands

Colourful trees rippling in the air

Dull rocks rolling downhill

Green bushes arising uphill

Runing water flows calmly like a snake in the grass

Hard wind howling at the campsite

Giant waves crashing against the wall

Scooping prickly dirt from the earth

Raging river splashing everywhere

Class Camping

The bright sunny sky

With the golden shining sun

Reflecting off the calm glistening water

Rippled only by falling leaves

Coming down off the trees bent like an old man

Moaning like the lonely owl at night

Perched up high in its cozy nest

Swaying on the rocky mountain we climbed

You could see the windy dig sight we went to

Looking for bones and old arrowheads

Doing math on some man who's dead

We all then tried to get some sleep

And the owl was the only one who made a peep

Kusawa

Kusawa Lakes frigid water

Boulders are very elephantine

Fractional rocks

Cheerful laughing people

Tents standing still like trees

Days passing quickly

Creek flowing down the mountain

Soaring winds whistling through the trees

Natural Images

Towering trees waver, sighing with the wind

Rough rocks tumbling like pebbles in a marble track

Rigid mountains galloping like horses running free

The heavy winds shouting

Swirling dirt brown as bark

Splashing water dark as wine

Massive clouds soaring with the wind

Steep hills climbing higher over

Vast colliding waves

Crashing chilly whitecaps as cold as ice

Kusawa Nature

Flowing lake unbelievably cold.

Collapsed trees dying.

The tasty addictive creek.

Cheerless clouds are dark.

Moldy rocks disintegrating slowly over the years.

Verdant grass rippling like they were about to fly away .

Soft dirt blowing away.

Annoying insects crawling on me like an army of crazy people.

Growing mountain heights.

Punishing wind destroying.

Wet wooden dock bouncing in the lake .

Joyful hike up the mountain.

Nature At Best

Transparent water reflecting clear as a mirror

Dazzling blue sky like a big blue blanket

Wild wind whisking

Prickly bushes poking knowing it hurts

Swarms of black flies watching our every move ready to attack

Grass on the hills makes a good bed

Massive boulders are chairs for tired souls

Blinding sun blazing down on us

Natural Energy

Harsh hike pushing up

Long rocky trails

Noisy quarreling stream

Vicious boulder trampeling down

Annoying bugs swarming

Heavy wind cohersing

Savage lake, gasping for air

Surging creak, acquiescing our thirst

Trance, luminous stars

Infinite darkness

Kusawa Poem

Spectacular Kusawa

Dry tents blowing in the wind

People running around the campsite

Occupied campsite having fun

Mystic owl exclaiming

Pine trees as green as glittering grass

Fluffy clouds

Sharp pine cone rasping against each other

Green grass rippling

The glassy water running

Snow white as the soft clouds

Kusawa Mountain Range

Bold and strong wind yelling into your face

Puffy clouds grey as gulls

Reflecting lake shockingly refreshing you

Rapid water not at all inviting

Blinding sun sizzling

Endless ups and downs mountains descending

Scenic Kusawa range

Endless as rolling hills trails extensive

White cap waves expiring you

Rolling hills steep yet passionate

Kusawa Camp

River Swerving As Slowly As A Snail

Towering Mountains Boldly Against The Sky

Dropping Lake Sharply Like A Cliff

Sluggishly Hike Upwards Like the Gold Miners And The Chilkoot

Blowing Wind Heavily

Lightly Covered Shielding Eyes

Sharp Burning Sensation Like A Pot Of Boiling Water

Blinding Sand As Speedily As A Speeding Bullet

Needing A Shield Quickly

Regaining Sight Slightly like Being Winded

Colossal Leaves Falling

Rough Rocks Crashing To The Dark Depths Below

Blue Waves Gliding Like A Bird Soaring

A Windy day at Kusawa

Rolling, massive rocks were as huge as giants

Swaying thin willows were as skinny as twigs

Pointy waving grass whisteled to everyone who went past

Growing miniature mushrooms

Soaring fluffy clouds as white as snow

Burning fires as hot as the sun

Blowing baby seeds

Towering waves colliding were as big as a hurricane

Majestic trees swinging in the air

Sandy dirt rising harsh on your skin

Glistening berries rippening

Dry bark peeling

Chilly water splashing as cold as ice

Noisy creek rushing was like the roar of a lion

Wicked wind howling hurt your eyes and ears

Natural Kusawa

Polar blue water

Shivering creaturous creek winding down the mountain

Rough rocks ready to be released

Heavy wind calling us all

Rustling leaves swirling like ballerinas

Motionless mountains being disturbed

The dusky sky looking down at us

Clouds form a picture in my mind

Lords of the land

Busy as bugs having fun

Happy hikers

Kusawa Scenery

Powerful winds howling like a spoiled child

Irritating sand blasting in your face

Wonderful mountain looming over the campground

Beautiful scenery looking like a painting

Steep cliff leaning over the creek

Enormous boulders ready to roll

Interesting bones decaying waiting to be found

Chilly lake reflecting like a mirror

Ascending trail winds just like a snake in the grass

Bothersome bugs biting

Small creek serving as a water fountain

Sounds and Movements of Nature

lonesome mountains sit so frozen

wind shivers on the snowy tree tops

snap of wind comes up and blows the trees

leaves fall silently into freezing air

trees stand so lonely and cold

morning echoes into the brezze

as the sun glares into your eyes like fire

soft sounds of birds in the distance

sky moves ever so swiftly

leaves fluter to the ground slowly

mountains silently loom in the rays of the sun

grass swiftly flows in the wind

Natural Illusions

Trembling spruce whistling with the wind

Running pine tree peeling

Waving birtch tree pale white as if it was frozen solid

Tumbling rocks crushing like they are trying to kill you

Whistling wind blowing as if I am on Everest

Crystal clear water shining

Bright blue sky moving as...

Colourful birds singing like a boiling kettle

Blasting sand stinging

Shining stream trickling like liquid diamond

Jagged mountains towering
