Special Opportunities

Every year Innovators in the Schools offers a number of Special Opportunities, often in partnership with other groups. Keep checking back here for details.

2010/2011 Special Opportunities (most recent at top)  

  1. Swan Haven Interpretive Program: Every April, Environment Yukon's Wildlife Viewing Program hosts interpretive activities for Grades 2-6 at Swan Haven. Visit the Swan Haven School Programs website for more information or call 667-8291. Can't visit Swan Haven this year? You can still participate in the Student Art Contest.
  2. Stay-A-Day at Yukon College (Grade 7): Classes come up to Yukon College in the spring to do hands-on activities led by College instructors. They do two sessions in a day. Classes are booked by calling Innovators in the Schools at 668-8739.
  3. Raven Recycling Education Program: Raven Recycling provides a number of fun classroom presentations: worm composting, garbage free lunches, recycling, the 3 R's and papermaking. Tours of the Centre can also be booked. Visit the Raven Recycling website or call the Education Coordinator at 667-7269 ext 23.
  4. Crazy About Science: Saturday mornings of fun science at Yukon College offered in partnership with the City of Whitehorse for Ages 6-11. Call Canada Games Centre at 668-8360 to book.

2009/2010 Special Opportunities (most recent at top)  

  1. Yukon College Summer Camps 2010: Weekly science, computer and trades camps at Yukon College (Whitehorse) and in Dawson & Haines Junction. Check out the links and call 668-8745 for more details. Brought to you by Yukon College.
  2. Stay-A-Day at Yukon College (Grade 7): Classes have come up to Yukon College this spring to do activities focused on Chemistry, GPS, Carpentry, First Aid, Water Resources and Health. They do two sessions in a day. Classes are booked by calling Innovators in the Schools at 668-8739.
  3. Yukon College Girls Science Club: The second year of the Girls Science Club! They are focusing on a Climate Change theme with many special presenters and a field trip to the Yukon Wildlife Preserve in June. Call Innovators at 668-8739 to find out more.
  4. Crazy About Science: Saturday mornings of fun science at Yukon College offered in partnership with the City of Whitehorse for Ages 6-11. Call Canada Games Centre at 668-8360 to book.

2008/2009 Special Opportunities (most recent at top)  

  1. Yukon Science Quest & Computer Camp 2009: Weekly science & computer camps at Yukon College (Whitehorse) and in Dawson & Mayo.
  2. Yukon College Girls Science Club: After a successful first meeting of the Girls Science Club (Grades 3-6) at Yukon College (Whitehorse) in the spring with 7 interested girls; it was determined that the Club would start up again in the fall of 2008. Call 668-8739 to find out more. Update: 18 girls have been joining us for a monthly 2 hour Saturday morning club session. They have focused on a Water Theme. The last of the eight club meetings for 2008/2009 will be on June 6.

  2. Crazy About Science: Saturday mornings of fun science at Yukon College offered in partnership with the City of Whitehorse for Ages 6-11. Check out the Fall Schedule and new Spring Schedule. Call Canada Games Centre at 668-8360 to book.
  3. Crystal Growing Competition: Offered up to high school students. Register with Innovators at 668-8739. Check out details and order the starting material - Aluminum Potassium Sulfate - from Sept 10 to Oct 5. The crystal growing period is from Oct 8 to Nov 12.

2006/2007 Special Opportunities (most recent at top)  

  1. Yukon Science Quest & Computer Camp 2007: Weekly science & computer camps at Yukon College (Whitehorse) and in Dawson & Mayo.
  2. Yukon Science Quest: Weekly science focused camps during the Canada Winter Games for Grades K-7. Check out details and call Parks & Recreation at 668-8325 to book.
  3. Arctic Mission: Over the next few months the Beringia Centre is hosting a series of five movies put out by the National Film Board of Canada called "Arctic Mission". Special viewings for Grades 7-12 on Feb 6 (The Great Adventure); Feb 21 (People of the Ice); Mar 14 (Washed Away); Mar 28 (Climate on the Edge); Apr 11 (Lords of the Arctic).   4. Crazy About Science: Saturday mornings of fun science at Yukon College offered in partnership with the City of Whitehorse for Ages 6-12. Check out the Fall Schedule and Winter Schedule. Call Parks & Recreation at 668-8325 to book.

2005/2006 Special Opportunities (most recent at top)     

  1. Miracle Planet: Over the next few months the Beringia Centre is hosting a series of five movies put out by the National Film Board of Canada called "The Miracle Planet". Special viewings for Grades 7-12 will be advertised. Check out the Beringia Centre website for more details.
  2. Stay-A-Day at Yukon College (Grade 7): Nine Yukon classes are spending 2 fun-filled hours at Louis Schilder's Chemistry Lab at Yukon College in 2005/2006. Planning is taking place for the extended Stay-A-Day program (Chemistry Lab and GPS Scavenger Hunt) in the spring of 2006.
  3. Science Olympics (Grades 8-9): Watch for this program in the spring of 2006.
  4. Youth Research Fund: This fund will be available to families, students and classes. Planning is taking place.  
  5. Crystal Growing Competition: Offered up to high school students. Register with Innovators at 668-8739. The extended deadline to register and order materials was Monday October 3, 2005. Two schools are registered in the Yukon competition: Vanier Secondary and Wood Street Check out details
