About this site

This site is hosted by Yukon College's Community and Extensions Services and serves as a central place for information on the International Polar Year 2007-2008 (IPY4).

I am Amanda Graham. I'm the coordinator/instructor of the University of the Arctic at Yukon College. I'm a historian by training (Lakehead University, MA, 1994) and a generalist in Northern and Circumpolar Studies by inclination and happy accident.

In the spring of 2006, I began thinking that it might be useful to develop a course on the IPY4, given that I was beginning to hear a lot about the Year but couldn't find a great deal of good information about it. As its organization and conceptualization gained momentum, I also thought of the benefit to people who will encounter the IPY in the personal or professional lives. Surely such people would want to understand this international undertaking a bit better. Indeed, I, myself, wanted to know more about it. This course is the result of that thinking.

University of the Arctic has been endorsed by the international committee of the IPY as an education and outreach body for the IPY. The UArctic has kindly agreed to, in turn, endorse this course, and adopt it as one of their IPY activities.

As the Year (really, it's two years to allow for two field seasons at both poles) progresses, I'm posting IPY news and other information that I encounter. If you know of any resources that ought to be included here, please contact me.

You may browse this site and, if you like, you may become a member. The system will ask for your e-mail address and will add it to the list of members (which allows other members to e-mail you but not learn your address). I don't use your e-mail address for anything and no salesperson will contact you as a result of your joining this site. If you agree to accept bulletins, you may receive the occasional notices from me, but they will be very occasional. The RSS feed for the site is free to use and does not require membership to use.
