(CP via Canada.com, 4 July 2007) -- DARTMOUTH, N.S. (CP) - The Canadian Coast Guard icebreaker Louis St-Laurent
is headed for the Arctic on a four-and-a-half month sovereignty patrol
and scientific expedition. While in the north the ship will aid
commercial shipping, support Canada's commitment to the United Nations
Convention on the Law of the Sea, and aid researchers as they recognize
the International Polar Year. It left Dartmouth today carrying an
international team of scientists who will oversee 44 experiments
covering wildlife, human health and atmospheric projects. Canada's IPY
program is focused on two priority areas -- climate change impacts and
adaptations, and the health and well-being of northern communities.
