Telling Stories With Tangrams

Book Report for November

Due: Nov. 22-26

Tangrams are ancient Chinese puzzles. Storytellers use the puzzle pieces, called tans, when they tell stories.

You can tell stories with tangrams, too. To get ready for your storytelling, plan which tan you will use for each of your scenes. You will need five - one scene for the beginning of the book, 3 for plot events throughout the book, and one for the climax.

For each scene, you can use as many of the tans as you want, and you can repeat the tans in each scene. You can’t overlap the tans or write on the pages. You also have to write a one paragraph summary of your book. Make sure that each piece of paper has the book title, the author’s name, and your name clearly identified on it.

Materials:

tan pattern

5 pieces blank paper

5 pieces construction paper (for tans)

scissors pen lined paper for paragraph summary

Due Date: _____________

Our next book project, due at the end of October, will involve you choosing a new book and following these directions:

Objective:

To interpret a character by packing a suitcase with tangible and non-tanglible (real and symbolic) items the character might pack on a trip. These items have to be a little “deeper” than say a toothbrush!

Materials:

shoebox

construction paper

colouring supplies

glue stick

fabric

stickers

other supplies as imagined

Students are responsible for supplying their own materials.

Directions:

1) You will be making a suitcase for a book character with all the items they may need on a trip. The trip will be a setting from your novel.

2) Decorating the suitcase is up to you, but your project has to have the following items:

- a luggage tag that has the character’s name, address, and destination on it;

The second thing you are to do is to create a puppet of the main character using an old sock and material you find around the house. Create a figure to look like the main character from your book.

Finally, you need to introduce your puppet to the class on Sept. 26-28. You will be marked on your knowledge of your puppet.
