Day at Marsville

When we first arrived at Marsville, we put our lunches in a box to be weighed. Then we went upstairs and put our jackets away by the tables, and we got t-shirts that said our names and YSA, (Yukon Space Agency) on the front. My t-shirt was orange.

Then we went downstairs into the gym and watched a video about going into space and how they would put a rover on Mars. Once we were told about how the day would go, we were put into teams with 4 kids from Mayo and 7 kids from Whitehorse.

We built a dome out of plastic that we had cut before the trip. We then taped up the dome and cut out a hole for the fan. When we blew up the dome and we cut a hole for the door and tunnel. After that, we did a scavenger hunt on the internet. Then we were shown a display on solar panels and a tool to cook the food in the sun. We cooked marshmallows in the tool, then ate them. We were given mars bars for a snack.

At 12:00 we ate lunch in the dome we made with our habitat team. We had to put our garbage in a box to be weighed.

After lunch, astronaut Julie Payette gave a presentation on engines and how they move in space. She told us who was currently in space. One person from each group asked her a question. What I thought the two most interesting things she talked about was the engines and how they adjusted to no gravity.

After that we had to get our lego rovers to go through a maze. The rovers are programmed by a computer to a brain box to move. Our rover was the only one to make it through the maze.

Then we had to show our space suit. The most odd looking space suit had a pop bottle and an ice-cream bucket as the helmet.

Our space suit was white, with a skidoo helmet and our class patches. Our model was Dusty.

Then we looked at the other groups domes, cleaned up and went home.

My Day At Marsville

On April 20, 2007 our class went to Vanier School in Whitehorse, for a Marsville project. When we got there at 9:00am we put our lunches in a box that says our team color and number. Then we went upstairs in the loft and put our jackets and the project there.

At 9:30 all the students watched a movie of a space launch and how the rover gets on the surface of mars.....It was pretty cool. Then we started building our team dome. All the students learned about solar power too. We were put into partners and had a scavenger hunt on the computer, it was fun. My partner and I got mixed up with the schools and the teachers.

At 10:00 our team probably finished airing the domes up with a fan, it felt so cool inside. We also had a break and one of those people who were running the Marsville project gave all the students Mars Bars, they were yummy....but i thought it was too early to eat chocolate, so I gave mine away to Denise McDiarmid.

12:00 - After we finished building our domes we ate lunch in our team domes. It was pretty cool. After lunch we went into another gym and listened to an astronaut talk with Julie Payette. She talked about what she did and she showed us pictures and we watched a little video clip of a real shuttle takeoff. It was very neat. Julie Payette was a Canadian female who went to Space. The picture that she showed all the people there, was what it looked like in the shuttle and how people stay on the floor and a picture of how people eat and the washroom. It was neat. One student from each school asked Julie Payette a question. Our Class asked “ What have you discovered while you were in Space?” But I forgot what she said. I also learned how a shuttle takes off and that it only took a couple of days for her to get to Space Station.

After the astronaut talk was over there was a Rover Demonstration. At 2:00 there were 3 rovers counting our classes rover. Our rover was the only one that turned and it was so close to not turning, but it did.

At 2:15 the Space Suit Fashion Show was on. It was really funny. One class had an ice cream bucket on their head and a 1 Liter empty pop bottle on their back. After that Space Suit Fashion Show all the students cleaned up and we all took down the domes, got our demonstration and went home. It was a very interesting day and very fun, I would like to do it again.

Marsville Link Up Day

When we got to the 2007 Marsville project we went up stairs to put our jackets away. After that we went back down stairs. Then we got t-shirts to put on. My t-shirt was brown and it has Marsville 2007 with a space shuttle. After that we had to put our lunch in a box so they could weigh it. Then we went to sit down and watched a movie of a space shuttle launch.

After that we went over to these two people. They showed us some solar panels. It was an alternative energy display that powers by the sun. There were rovers and this thing that went around in circles. We also cooked marshmallows in a box made out of tin foil that was put in the sun. From this I learned that things could get powered by the sun.

After that we built our domes out of big huge pieces of plastic that we cut out, then we taped it together and aired it up with a square fan. After that we went to the computers and did an internet scavenger hunt. On our way back to finish our domes we got mars bars. mmmmmm

Lunch We ate lunch in the domes we made and after we ate we put our garbage in a box.

After that we went into another gym to see Julie Payette. Julie Payette is a female canadian astronaut. She went into space one time for ten days. Julie Payette talked about some things like how to go to the washroom in space, how her experience was in space, what astronauts eat in space, how they exercise in space, and how they sleep in space. Julie Payette also showed us some pictures of her friends in space. After Julie Payette was done Jamie and I got a picture taken with her.

After we saw Julie Payette we did the rover demonstration. A rover is sort of like a space car. We made a miniature rover made of Lego. We made it move by this brain box piece. We program all the stuff such as speed, how far it goes and how much it turns. There were three rovers and ours was the only one to make it though the maze.

After that we did the space suit fashion show. We saw models of space suits with kids dressed in them. It was funny. Dusty was our model. We saw a kid with the space suit on and she had an ice cream bucket on her head. We saw another kid in his space suit that had music coming out. Our space suit had our patches on it, the name Halo on it, with white boots, a black helmet with a canada flag on it. It also had blue stripes and a jet pack with a battery pack in it.

After the fashion show we went in all of the domes, cleaned up then we went home. Marsville was fun

Marsville

When I got there I put my jacket away on a carpet and then we watched a space movie of a space shuttle launch and then we saw what solar systems do.

Then we made domes and then after we made domes we ate lunch. Then we got to see other peoples projects and then we got to meet Julie Payette.

Then we got to do the rovers and our rover was the only one that made it through the maze. Then we had to do the space modeling and there were three spacesuits that looked funny, one that looked kind of cool because it looked liked a real spacesuit and one that was ours.

Then we got to wander around in each others domes.

Our Day At Marsville

Our Marsville Day

When we first got to Marsville we went upstairs and took our coats or sweaters of and they gave us tee-shirts with our name on them. Then we went downstairs and Mr. Good and Mr. Markley were down there going to give us a presentation about mars. Then we started our habitat. Then as soon as we knew it, it was lunch time.

At lunch we ate in our domes with our teams and put our garbage in boxes and they weighed our lunches. After lunch we went to see Julie Payette. She is a female Canadian Astronaut and she talked to us about how to go to the bathroom in space, what they eat in space and how important it is to know everything about their ship.

After we left from Julie Payettes presentation we went to see the presentation of the rovers that the schools that were participating in marsville built. The only rover that made it through the course was ours.

After that we went to the space suit fashion show. The most bizarre space suit was the first one we saw. It had an ice-cream bucket helmet with a pop bottle that was decorated with beads.

After that we had a tour of all the domes, cleaned up and went home.

Marsville 2007

9:00 - We arrived and we put our jackets upstairs.

9:15 - Intro - We watched a video about a liftoff of a space shuttle. It also showed us how they put the rover on Mars. Our team had orange shirts. Our habitat was the letter C.

9:30 - Activities - We built our domes which was really cool. Then we did internet activities, we had to find certain places on Mars. Then came a little thing where two people showed us different ways we can use energy on Mars. We also had marshmallows there.

12:00 - Lunch - We ate our lunches in our separate domes.

12:25 - Astronaut talk With Julie Payette - Julie Payette talked to us and she answered some of our questions. Julie Payette is a Canadian astronaut who went into space on a space shuttle. The two most interesting thing I learned were: how the use the washroom in space, to use the washroom you have to velcro your feet to some sort of things for your feet. They have a regular toilet for solid waste and it is sort of like a vcuum and it sucks it up. There is sort of a funnel like thing for liquid waste. How you move around n the small spaces. You have to push on the walls to move anywhere.

More Activities - We had to build a rover in class. The rover was built out of Lego. It had a little motor. We used a computer program and downloaded it onto the little programmer on the rover. We took it to Whitehorse and put it through a maze.

We had to design a space suit to walk on Mars with. Dusty modelled it for our school. I think the most bizarre and creative space was one that had an ice cream bucket on their head and a soda bottle. It was cool seeing all the interesting space suits created by different schools.
