The Territorial Honour is a literary award. Intermediate novels are nominated by students who then, following award criteria, present their reasoning for the nomination. Following this presentation and questioning, votes are cast and the novel is either accepted or declined.
During a literature circle in Ms. Tillett's classrooms, a discussion about how books receive awards emerged. Students decided that they would research existing awards to try and determine who makes choices and the criteria on which decisions are based. The students then presented their finding to the class and this brought about the general observation that most awards are chosen by adults and not children, particularly children from Northern Canada. The students wanted their voices heard when it came to awarding novels with literary honours and so it was proposed that we develop our own book awards.
In cooperation with the librarian and Ms. Tillett, the students voted on an award name. Once that was determined, students were asked to submit designs that reflected their northern surroundings as well as reading. The class voted for the final design and that student artist then worked with a graphic artist to create the final product.
Ms. Tillett is now at Jack Hulland and so it seemed only natural that the award should evolve and include the voices of the children who attend Jack Hulland. It is hoped that one day, schools across the Yukon will be active participants in the award process.
