I think colourizing the sky and sea makes the whole thing look just that much more surreal. The background image is a distance shot of the ice shelf Austfonna on Nordaustlandet, Svalbard. The small birds are little auks (which wouldn't really be found in a scene like this) and the larger ones are kittiwakes. The birds are vectorized from photographs of actual birds.
